Managed Path

When creating a new site collection, you need to select a “site prefix” for your new site collection (see left image). The site prefix provides an effective “logical boundary” for all your site collections.

To add or edit these “site prefixes”, go to Central Administration, “Application Management” –> “Manage Web Application”, click on the web application name, such as “Sharepoint – 80”, then click the “Managed Path” button from the ribbon.

You can add new prefixes there. For example, “ind” (individual) for individual web sites.
