MSDN – Configure Profile Synchronization

  1. Compeltes a profile sync planning worksheet: (an Excel file with one page of questions)
  2. To configure profile sync, you must have a farm account and sync account, each with specific permissions. Incorrect permission are the ost common cause of errors
    during profile sync.
  3. Farm account permissions: (** Farm Account is not the same as farm administrator account)
    Farm account is the account through which Sharepoint connects to its configuration database. To access the farm account, Central Admin à Security à General Security à Configure Service Account

    1. Farm account must be a member of the administrator group on the syn server. You can remove the permission after.
    2. Farm account must be able to log on locally to the sync server.
  4. Sync Account Permissions: used to access directory service and sync profile information between Sharepoint server and directory service. You will provide this account and its password when you create a sync profile. For AD DS (Active Directory Directory Service)
    1. Replicate Directory Changes permission
  5. Procedures:
    1. Configure the farm—create a web application to host My Site and create a User Profile service application.
      1. Create a new web application; create managed path; create a new site collection based on the My Site Host template.
    2. Start the user profile sync service –
      1. Central Admin à Application management à Manage service Applications, create a new User Profile Sync service application. In the My Site Host URL, enter the URL of the My Site site collection.
      2. Enable NetBIOS domain names on the user profile service if NetBIOSName is different FQDN
      3. Start the User Profile Service and User Profile Sync Service: Central Admin à Manage Services on Server
      4. Reset iis: iisseset
    3. Configure connections and import data from directory service
      – create a sync connection to each directory service from which you want to import profile information, and perform the initial sync.
    4. Configure connections and import data from business systems
      – if applicable. May be skipped
    5. Configure connections and export data to directory service – modify profile mappings and export data back to directory service.
